Novel Bioinspired Optimization Techniques for Resilience and Sustainability

Keynote at the IDEAL 2023 Conference

The 24th International Conference on Intelligent Data Engineering and Automated Learning (IDEAL 2023) took place in the historical town of Évora, Portugal, from November 22nd to 24th, 2023. Locally organized by Paulo Quaresma, Vítor Nogueira and Teresa Gonçalves and chaired by Paulo Quaresma, David Camacho and Hujun Yin, the conference brought together researchers interested in intelligent data analysis, data mining and their associated learning systems and paradigms. Carlos Cotta, member of the Bio4Res Team was honored to be a Keynote Speaker at this conference.

Carlos Cotta’s keynote was entitled “Resilience in Bioinspired Algorithms: Towards Future-Proofing Optimization”, and provided an overview of algorithmic resilience in connection with bioinspired optimization algorithms, and in particular evolutionary and memetic systems. The abstract of the talk follows:

Resilience is the capacity of a system to recover and resume normal operation following a disruption. It is a crucial feature in many domains, and particularly in bioinspired optimization algorithms, such as evolutionary computation and swarm intelligence methods. We devise a field map for resilience and show how bioinspired algorithms do not only possess notorious built-in resilience, but are also flexible enough to accommodate algorithmic add-ons oriented to boost resilience. This paves the way for outlining potential research directions in this field.

An engaged audience featuring both young researchers and senior scientists from the broad area of data science and computational intelligence listened to the talk, and provided insightful questions during the lively Q&A that ensued after the keynote. The Bio4Res team wishes to thanks the local team and the scientific organizers for creating such a stimulating atmosphere and having the conference running so smoothly!
