The 22nd International Conference on Practical Applications of Agents and Multi-Agent System (PAAMS 2024) was held in Salamanca from June 26th to June 28th in hybrid format, alongisde the Salamanca Tech Summit as well as other international scientific conferences. In this edition, PAAMS featured a demo track in which practical applications of multi-agent systems were exhibitted along the corresponding scientific paper. We had the pleasure of taking part in this track with our work on agent-based cellular automata for simulating pedestrian evacuation from indoor environments.
The title of our demo paper was «Using an Agent-Based Cellular Automaton for Emergency Evacuation Simulation» by D. Bueno, C. Cotta, and J.E. Gallardo, and the abstract is as follows:
We consider a simulation-based approach to address crowd evacuation problems. An agent-based cellular automaton model is used to model the environment and the collective behavior of the crowd, taking into account both rational decision-making and social interaction. We have developed an interactive visualization tool that is used to provide a demonstration of the use of this model and show how it can be used to capture different qualitative crowd behaviors.
